I got this book a few months ago, but 1) I was disappointed upon receiving and flipping through this book, and 2) I've just been too busy to sit down and read it. I finally took the time to read through it this last week and I was pleasantly surprised. Aside from the fact that the title is "Favorite SOUTHERN Dives..." and the book contains sections from Maryland and Delaware (what the heck?), it's actually a pretty good book. I have purchased a similar type book in the past and was sorely disappointed. This book contains a short, simple review of the restaurants it includes, but concentrates more on the recipes. Though there are a few repeats (see coconut cream pie), I suspect he included them because the recipes are not identical. I like that this book seems to actually include restaurants that are "off the beaten path" rather than only popular, fine-dining establishments. I'm pretty excited to try some of the recipes, though I will note that a lot of the recipes call for shortcuts such as jarred gravy that I wonder if the restaurants really use. Also, I think the book may contain more dessert recipes than savory ones, but who am I to complain about that? ;-P

I actually ordered this for our RV travels but found it so enjoyable that i read the whole thing as soon as i received it. the pictures are just great and in color making it a real cut above average. it is a fun book with wonderful recipes and information for off the beaten path travels. We will have it in the RV with us when we leave in two weeks and then it will go back in my kitchen cookbook library. a gem! It was advertised in an email from Coastal Living so i ordered it immediately from .
This book gives you a great perspective into some really out of the way but great restaurants. I hate "chain restaurants," and if you do as well, this will tell you some great out of the way places to eat that are not on most folks' radar. The favorite one I have tried Ezell's Fish Camp on the Tombigbee River in Lavaca, Alabama. You gotta try their Catfish, Cole Slaw, and hush puppies before you die!
Great book, love the postcards from each state. This book is perfect for the times, love to travel and eat? This is a way to get a taste of the south without an airline ticket or a tank of gas. But if you want to visit some of the featured eateries, there are directions complete with GPS locations. Recipes are yummy, photos are awesome. Plus travel hints and ideas for other places to visit as well. I bought 2 for gifts (both for family members who love to cook)...and one for myself as well. Also good for a wish list of places to visit sometime and eat in person!
I ordered the book after seeing an add for it in my Southern Living Magazine. The price was great so hey why not. Im addicted to cookbooks and can spend hours just reading and looking at the pictures. The book arrived very quick (it might have been 1 day) and in great shape. This is a cute book with amazing pictures. I dont live in the South so I cant speak for how well it works as a travel/restaurant guide, but I've found some good recipes that I cant wait to try out. Even if I dont end up using the boook that much it does look GREAT on the shelf.
Well, the recipes in this book are very lame - very basic - like any good cook knows most of these. Now there are about 12 unique recipes in the book - but the majority are like I said - lame. I would not not have included half of them in a published book. I have better recipes for many of them already. I would not suggest spending any $$ on this book. It is more of an entertaining publication - definatly not for a serious cook looking for new recipes.
Very interesting "cookbook" / Culinary entertainment publication. While I do not anticipate traveling to most of these Southern oriented featured places, I do love to read about them. I sat down and pretty much read the book cover to cover. The recipes are interesting but I will probably try only a handful. But.. it's nice to know they are there! I will make a point of visiting these sites if, by chance, I end up in some of the locations. All in all, an excellent value for the money and really Fun.
Of course, you would expect some "keepers" in a book about special, local restaurant "gems" in the South. If you get this book, you will have to read through it and mark the best recipes, because they are listed--not by category--but as in a travelogue. You'll need some reminder that they are in there somewhere.

What I especially liked about it, was some of the interesting ingredients used (I don't mean exotic or unfamiliar) to create pies, batters, coatings, etc. It does provide inspiration.

It might be a good idea to borrow this from the library before purchasing. It's more of a fun book than one you'll turn to again and again. It's not one that will get dog-eared from use.
